We’ve all been to some version of this wedding, right? Somewhere in the sea of guests, Aunt Tilda - who flew in all the way from Arizona, by the way - sighs heavily and curses under her breath, but it’s loud enough that her 12-year-old nephew Rodney hears, and snickers out loud. A tired baby in the back of the room starts to cry.īRRRrrrrriiiiiiingggg! BRRRrrrrriiiiiiingggg!Īll eyes finally land on Uncle Terry, who’s fumbling for the phone in his pocket in a panic at the back of the room, desperate to make it stop. Seconds rush past, while the phone only seems to grow louder. Disapproving murmurs rises up from the crowd. The bride, startled into silence, looks to the wedding officiant in confusion. BRRRrrrrriiiiiiingggg! BRRRrrrrriiiiiiingggg! “Chris, my best friend and love of my life, I promise to ke-” She takes a deep breath to steady her nerves, smiles, and begins to read: The bride grins at the groom over the altar as their wedding officiant passes her the small notecard with her carefully written marriage vows. In fact, we’re live and the ceremony is underway!įriends and family have gathered in a beautifully decorated room, where lilacs and heather placed along the aisle fill the cool spring air with the heady scent of love. Keep humour to a minimum you haven’t been employed to be the stand-up comic.You are giving announcements, not barking orders at your troops. You need to speak clearly and loudly, but this shouldn’t be interpreted as bossy and deafening. Go through your role with the groom and other speakers, so they know when and how you’ll be introducing them.Introduce yourself with your first announcement so guests know who you are, but keep it short.Plan where each announcement will be made to avoid uncertainty.Test the microphone out before guests arrive to get a feel for the acoustics. ![]() Here are some tips to help master the role: ![]() Although you may worry about the first announcement, you’ll grow into the role throughout the day and will feel immeasurably more relaxed by the time you come to give your speech. Most importantly it will give you an idea of the acoustics and a feel for the microphone. You’ll appear confident and in a position of responsibility from the start, which will impress fellow guests. You’ll have the chance to shout out some pretty straightforward messages, getting you used to speaking in front of an audience. If you are a nervous best man, then being MC is often a safe way of getting over many of your biggest fears before your speech.
